When companies talk about sustainability, they often refer to a series of generalities that in most cases are nothing more than declarations of good intentions with very few concrete measures. At Casas de Hualdo we wanted to convert our commitment into action in order to measure the actual impact of our decisions. To do this, a few years ago we measured our carbon footprint based on the international GHG protocol, a corporate accounting and reporting standard for the organization’s Greenhouse Gases (GHG). The gases studied were: CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane) and N2 O (nitrous oxide), as they are considered the most important due to their impact on the environment (included in the Kyoto protocol along with three other families of gases: HFC, PFC and S6)

Our aim is to continue to improve the quality of our early harvest oils, with innovative techniques that allow us a better management of the olives during the first days of the campaign. Our vision of the future and our commitment to the environment have led us to undertake this large-scale investment: one of the largest photovoltaic solar plants for pumping in Spain. The facility covers an area of 1.3 hectares within the Hualdo estate. It has an installed power of 567 kWp. The power is used for the irrigation of approximately 100 ha of arable crops and 270 ha of olive grove.

Our commitment to environment led us to consider the implementation of an Environmental Management System. We chose the UNE-EN ISO 14001 standard, which has allowed us to structure the environmental aspects related to the different processes developed in Casas de Hualdo, to promote environmental protection and pollution prevention from a point of view of balance with the socio-economic aspects.
